cPanel essentials
Manage website files in cPanel
Find the correct document root and upload or edit files with File Manager.
Before you begin
Back up the files you will change. Confirm the domain's document root; the primary site's files often live in public_html, while additional domains can use another directory. Do not edit a Git-managed deployment through File Manager unless its deployment process supports that workflow.
Use File Manager
- Open cPanel and search for File Manager.
- Open the intended domain's document root.
- Use Upload for files. For a folder, upload an archive and use Extract in the correct destination.
- Select a file and use Edit for supported text files. Preserve its encoding.
- Open the page in a browser and verify the result.
Recovery and troubleshooting
If a page breaks, restore your saved copy. File Manager can move deletions to Trash; use View Trash to inspect recoverable items. Do not empty Trash until you are sure the files are no longer needed. Check the document root, filename, and browser cache if an upload does not appear.
